Ontario provincial test scores released by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) today showed falling performance in elementary school (Grade 3 and 6) math (in terms of the fraction of students meeting provincial standards, relative to 2010), and even at the Grade 9 level where success rates have improved in the same period, more than half of students still fail to meet the standard (a fraction that rises to 90%, among those students who had failed to meet the standard in Grade 6). Meanwhile, there has been improving performance in Grade 3 and 6 reading and writing in the same period (while there was some disagreement between news sources on the English performance of Grade 10 students) released by EQAO. In the discussion of these results, The Globe and Mail<\/em> cited parents\u2019 calls for \u201ca back-to-basics approach to teaching math, emphasizing repetition and drills over problem solving\u201d (as has recently been re-implemented in Alberta).
